King of Bonaire recap and King of the Spot new event format

Κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού του Θησέα Καμπά στο Bonaire έγινε και το contest King of Bonaire με εμπνευστή τον Julien Mas τον Γάλλο freestyle windsurfer που έχει δουλέψει πολύ πάνω στο event format και στο καινούργιο scoring system του Pwa για το live streaming των events.

On march 2016, the first WindMeet edition of the King of Bonaire Freestyle Competition took place on paradisiac Bonaire island. It was a funny, full of action, 3 days windsurfing event on which 24 new and well known faces hit the water full power to battle for the Freestyle King or Queen crown.
A waiting period from 15th to 31 March allowed us to wait for the best wind conditions to start the competition. Unfortunately, Windguru and Windfinder where a bit too optimistic on their forecast so that Friday the 18th, which on the beginning looked good enough to run the qualifications, became a perfect day to test the new KOS running format and the live score system on the beach.

The KOS (King Of the Spot) qualification format foresees that every rider goes alone on the water and rips the spot for 3 minutes showing as many moves as possible on each tack. The twelve best riders, who did their “perfect run” during the qualification, were then invited to run the competition’s final on the Aquaspace Sailing boat Bonaire. Twelve radical freestylers went through a crazy dingle elimination on a windy, choppy and pretty hard-core spot around Klein Bonaire island.

It started upwith the runs on Saturday 19th at 9:00 am with light, but still nice and constant 5.2 conditions. It took some time before everyone got used to the running format, but Culos, Burners and Air funnels were scoring on that morning! As every rider had the possibility to run his qualification three times (only the best run was counting), we kept on going till the sunsetwhile the wind was increasing more and more and the riders pushing themselves higher and higher on 4.8 sails.

For sure we will remember the amazing Air Bob Culo from Amado Vrieswijk and the spectacular Air FlakaShaka 360 from Antony Ruenes…but it was also really nice to discover less known, but definitely radical windsurfers like Johanna Rümenapp, a young German girl who surprised the crowd with some Forward Loops, or ThiseasKambas from Greece who landed clean Burners!

It was also impressive to seehow surprising competition results can be with a different format: Stefano Lorioli, a 45 years old windsurf-addicted Italian guy beat freestyle legends as TatyFrans, AntnoyRuenes, and Amado Vrieswijk by reaching 47.22 points for his 10 moves run and getting the highest score of the whole qualification.

The final dingle elimination was run on Sunday afternoon around Klein Bonaire, a very small island in front of Bonaire. Stefano Lorioli, Amado Vrieswijk, Antony Ruenes, young gun CheppieGustowski, TatyFrans, Julien Mas, Youp Schmit, NicHibdidge, Florian Wegerer, Ezri Heymans, Aaron Etmon and Lennart Brüning were all there to fight for the crown.

An impressive performance was given by the promising windsurf champion Amado Vrieswijk who was landing) Double Air Culos and Shiftys in almost every heat.

But the young rider suddenly was stopped by an incredibly determinated TatyFrans, who was landing almost every move with a meticulous accuracy: he went big and clean, and won the final by a very little score difference to Amado.

It was a quite spontaneous competition, but everyone did something to make this event happen: some riders were judging, some were filming, some friendly people were managing the flags and other fans were taking pictures.

But very special thanks have to go to our sponsors, who provided the riders with food, drinks, official t-shirts, internet connection and prices! A big up to: Tricktionary – Akkermans Auto Supplies B.V – ABK Board Sports – Jibe City – Bonaire Windsurf Place – World of Windsurf – Aquaspace Bonaire.
Special thanks also to Alexis Fernet who helped us with the profile pictures of the Livescore System!
