Josh Riccio

I got the invitation to visit some fellow paddlers and Rogue SUP family in Athens, Greece for a
few days in mid November to do some downwind paddling. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect,
but I had been messaging a friend Dimitris Komninos from Athens for quite some time about all
things SUP related, and from talking with him it was obvious to me that Greece has some really
good downwind conditions.
I arrived on Monday the 16th of November, my girlfriend and I met Stefanos Aslandis, at the
airport who was kind to pick us up and take us to our hotel 30 minutes away in Glyfada. On the
drive to the hotel he talked about how excited he was to have us here in Greece and that he had
organized for the entire Rogue Sup crew in Greece to come paddle with me tomorrow. I was
already excited to get back on the SUP after eating my way around Italy, so this made me
extremely grateful and stoked to meet and paddle with these guys.
When I woke up the next morning I was eager to hear from Stefanos that there was some good
wind, after swinging by the Secret Spot surf shop that Stefanos and his best friend/business
partner Alexis Ioannou own and operate, we went to this popular windsurfing/kiting spot “
Surf Club” in Artemis which is where we started our downwind run. When I met the guys I would
be downwinding with; Dimitris Komninos, Nikos Athanasiou, Kostis Geralexis and Alex Prapas
there was an immediate friendship made between all of us. It was so cool to be with people/
paddlers on the other side of the world who have the same passion for downwinding as I do, so
obviously we were all really excited to get in the water and catch some bumps together.
Conditions were fun, weather was great, 80’s and sunny, there was a steady 15 knots of wind
blowing from the north-northeast, the bumps were small but there were some good glides out
there, there was a mix of wind directions on the run so there were some bumps criss crossing
and overlapping which allowed us to surf more to our destination, the run was fast and fun, we
finished the 5 mile-ish run in about 45 minutes, it may not have been the fastest run any of else
have ever been on but for me it was one of the most memorable. It was so awesome to have a
crew out there riding and connecting bumps together, we were all paddling with smiles on our
faces and once we got to the finish we all were eager to paddle some more so we decided to
paddle upwind for 30 minutes to get a few more bumps together coming back.
After the paddle we of course were sharing our experience of the run and about the bumps we
had out there, which for me I enjoy talking story about the run after the paddle almost as much
as the actual paddle itself because I always find it enlightening to hear others experience about
the conditions. So I was stoked to keep reliving the run over dinner back at the Nissakia Surf Club
Restaurant and Bar. We talked story for a couple hours over some burgers and beers about
everything SUP related; reliving the run we had, the future of the sport, the race scene in
Greece, board design, and all the good downwinding options in Greece.
Unfortunately there was only one good day of wind during my trip so the next day my girlfriend
and I explored the area around the hotel and then we met up Dimitris, Stefanos, Alexis and his
family to go on a cool sunset paddle out to some rock islands off the south coast of Athens
followed by some authentic greek food. On our last day Stefanos took us to the city center of
Athens where we got to walk around Acropolis and check out a greek history museum before
we had to head out to the airport, I have always been a big history buff so to visit the birthplace
of western civilization and walk around the ancient Acropolis was such an awesome way to
wrap up my trip to Greece.
I can’t thank everyone I met in Greece enough for all the hospitality they showed my girlfriend
and I during our trip in Greece. Stefanos Aslandis especially showed us hospitality on a level my
girlfriend and I have never experienced before. Amongst all of the memories I have of Greece,
the friendliness of the people I met will easily stand out to me as the most unforgettable part of
the trip. Thanks everyone for all the good times and good memories you showed me, hope to
see you all in the water again soon.
Aloha Josh Riccio
